What is Digital Literacy?

Having the knowledge and skills of how to use internet connecting devices and the internet comfortably to obtain information.

Why is Digital Literacy an issue?

In today's era of technology, being able to have a device that can reliably access the internet is essential for finding new jobs, health care, connecting with community and finding resources. Most information created for individual consumers is stored or engaged with electronically. With out a device and access to the internet, it is nearly impossible to thrive in our society

Where can I go if I don't have internet or a device that can connect?

Public libraries are open to everyone with free WiFi and computers for public use.

What is Digital Inclusion?

The work of bridging the digital divide through affordable broadband internet service, digital literacy skills training, and affordable device access

Why doesn't everyone have access to internet?

In some communities, and many rural areas, the internet service providers have not run cable to individuals' houses. Could be because it is a new development, or could be because the cost to create service for that individual would be more expensive to create than not. Some people don't have internet because they cannot afford the service. Some do not get service because they don't have a device that would use it, whether they don't want a device because they don't know how to use it, or they can't affprd a device.

Where can I go if I want to learn digital skills?

Northstar has self-taught courses online. Youtube is a great place to search specific issues as well. Some public libraries have in person training events open to the public.
